Reaching Out to the Community with Clothes

June 22, 2011

I have volunteered with many outreach events with the Dream Center.  I’m used to driving 40 miles to the inner city of Los Angeles to attend church and help with the countless outreach events they do.  I love being a part of making a difference in someone’s life.  However small it may be it still makes a difference.

This last Saturday was different.  It was special to me because it was an outreach I helped plan right here in my own suburban community.  I came along side a local young adult’s church group to organize a Free clothing giveaway.  Gently used clothes were donated by individuals and the Dream Center donated some brand new children’s clothing and let us borrow some clothing racks.  The young adults sorted the clothes, canvassed the neighborhood with flyers and prepared for the event.

There were people lined up early in the morning to get their Free clothes.  Each person (including children) were allowed to take 5 Free things.  By the end of the event over 200 people received Free clothes.  We prayed for those who wanted prayer and 2 people prayed the prayer of salvation, asking for the hope of Jesus into their heart.

Today the Los Angeles Dream Center has over 200 ministries, they distribute over 1,000,000 pounds of food per month, they provide free clothing to close to 1000 people a week.  But, that’s not how they started.  They started out slow.  Little by little.  Finding a need in the community and filling it.

Compared to what the Dream Center is doing today our local outreach was a small beginning.  The point is that it was a beginning.  For the 200 people who received free clothing and the 2 people who now know the hope of God –  It was Huge!

This last picture is so precious to me.  Mom and dad walking away, one arm filled with free clothes for their family and the other holding their sweet children.

What can you do for your community?
