Becoming a Woman of Freedom ~ Sin Nature and Holy Spirit

November 19, 2010

Here are some notes from our Bible Study series by Cynthia Heald.

1 Corinthians 9:26-27 (NLT)

So I run with purpose in every step. I am not just shadowboxing.  I discipline my body like an athlete, training it to do what it should. Otherwise, I fear that after preaching to others I myself might be disqualified.

  • Paul describes the battle every believer faces – the battle of our sin nature.  He calls it ‘discipline’ and ‘training’.  As good as our intentions might be, it will take discipline and training to “run with purpose in every step’ as described in this scripture.  God’s grace is always there for us every time we temporarily veer off course, but how much more fulfilling could our lives become if through discipline and training we took each step in our life with purpose?  Of course that is a rhetorical question… because we all know the cost we have paid for making choices that took us off the path of God’s purpose in our life.  Lastly, Paul says, “I fear that after preaching to others I myself might be disqualified.”  Proving that no matter how long with have walked with God – no one has arrived to a place were the battle of our sin nature doesn’t exist.

Galatians 5:16-17 (NLT)

So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves.

The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions.

  • We have the power within us to win the battle.  When we choose to submit to the Holy Spirit of God to guide our lives we won’t do what our sin nature wants to do.  The two forces live within us; the Holy Spirit and our sin nature – these two force have completely opposite desires and they fight each other for our choices.  It will take more than just good intentions to follow the Holy Spirit’s lead in our life – it will take discipline and training to submit to the Spirit of God as He leads us.

Romans 8:10-13 (NLT)

And Christ lives within you, so even though your body will die because of sin, the Spirit gives you life because you have been made right with God.

The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, he will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you.

Therefore, dear brothers and sisters, you have no obligation to do what your sinful nature urges you to do.

For if you live by its dictates, you will die. But if through the power of the Spirit you put to death the deeds of your sinful nature, you will live.

  • The same Spirit of God that raised Christ Jesus from the dead lives inside of us.  Just ponder that truth for a moment.  The Spirit of the living God lives in me and you!  Allowing that revelation to become a reality in our mind and thoughts is a key to unlocking the super natural power of God to win the battle over our sin nature.  We “have no obligation to do what our sinful nature urges us to do.”   We have the power over temptation.  We can win the battle because He who is in us is greater than our own sin nature.
