Becoming a Woman of Freedom

October 9, 2010

Here are a few of my notes from our Bible Study series by Cynthia Heald.

Galatians 5:1 It is for freedom that Christ has set us free.  Stand firm then and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.

Freedom is a wonderful gift from God.  It is however a gift that we must participate in so that we can enjoy the benefits of the freedom God has given to us.  We must “stand firm and not let yourselves” go back to our old ways that brought us to the place that we needed freedom from.

Hebrews 12:1-2 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.  Let us fix our eyes on Jesus.

  • This is my favorite ‘freedom scripture’ in the Bible.  It starts off by telling us “we are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses.”  There is a whole host of heroes in the faith who have gone before us – cheering us on.  For me, I always think of Rehab.  She wasn’t raised in a Godly environment.  She didn’t know God’s way.  Yet, the moment came in her life when she recognized God and had the faith to take a stand for Him.  When the walls of Jericho fell – all was destroyed, except for a small brothel were Rahab and her family were spared from the destruction.  Her story doesn’t end there.  She lives out her life with a godly man and becomes a great, great-grandmother in the genealogy of Christ and is remembered in the ‘Hall of Faith’ in the book of Hebrews.  Sometimes when the road gets tough I visualize her cheering me on, “If I could do it, so can you.  Keep going.  Keep going.”
  • This scripture continues with instruction, ” Let us thow off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, run the race with perseverance.”  Each one of us has a personal race that has been marked out for us.  God desires us to be able to run that race with perseverance.  But, we allow so many things to weigh us down.  We need to identify and throw off all the hindrances and sin so that we can run with the freedom God intends for us to have.  Keeping our eyes on the author of our faith, Jesus Christ.

John 8:31-32 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

  • God desires that we would know His truth and then for His truth to set us free.  He says these words, “If you hold to my teaching… then you will know the truth.”  This implies life application.  This is where the free gift of God’s freedom meet up with our participation.  Freedom is a gift and freedom is also a choice we make to lay aside all hindrances and sin that is keeping us from persevering in our personal race of life.
