Believe. Ask. Seek. Knock.

September 11, 2010

Mark 11:24  Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.

Matthew 21:22  If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer.”

  • Believe – To have a firm conviction as to the reality and goodness of something.
  • Ask – To make a request with an expectation of a positive response.

When we pray God tells us to be firm in our conviction of  His promises and then make our request, expecting a positive response.

It seems easy enough.  On the surface.  The biggest problem with this is our discouragement.  Maybe we have prayed.  We prayed with a complete belief.  And then, our prayer wasn’t answered when or how we hoped for.  Then discouragement comes and wears down our faith – making it hard for us to believe again.

The key is to remember all of God’s promises.  Last week we learned a little about perseverance and character.  Perseverance produces character and that leads us to hope again.  It is the same with prayer.  Perseverance in prayer produces a strong character in prayer which leads us to stronger belief in prayer through hope.

In spite of life’s disappointments – God is encouraging us not to give up on hope and continue to BELIEVE with confidence that He loves us and desires to bless us through His grace and mercy.

Luke 11:5-10

Then he said to them, suppose one of you has a friend, and he goes to him at midnight and says, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves of bread, because a friend of mine on a journey has come to me, and I have nothing to set before him.’

Then the one inside answers, ‘Don’t bother me. The door is already locked, and my children are with me in bed.  I can’t get up and give you anything.’

I tell you, though he will not get up and give him the bread because he is his friend, yet because of the man’s boldness he will get up and give him as much as he needs.

So I say to you:  Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.

For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened you anything.’

  • Jesus is the master story-teller.  In response to His disciples asking him to ‘teach them to pray’ – Jesus tells this story.   Actions that some might consider rude, Jesus considers to be Bold.  Some would not feel right disturbing someone with that kind of request.  I think Jesus knows that is exactly how some of us feel about prayer – we don’t feel right disturbing God with certain requests.  Especially, those that seem unthinkable.  God is encouraging us to come to Him boldly with our unimaginable, unthinkable requests… and BELIEVE.
  • Those who ask – receive.  Those who seek  – find.  Those who knock – it is opened.  Maybe not in our timing and way.  But the answer is coming… BELIEVE.
