Peace. Faith. Joy. Perseverance. Character. Hope.

September 2, 2010

Romans 5:1-5

Vs. 1 & 2 Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ

Through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God.

  • The first two verses of this scripture start off with great news for us.  We are justified – made right with God through Jesus Christ.  This gives us peace with God.  Our soul is right with God through Christ and all we do to receive this is have faith… BELIEVE.
  • Because we are at peace with God, we are free to have peace in our life.  Yay!  More good news.  This brings the joy of hope of the glory of God.  That is to have hope in all that God is and all His promises- He gives to us.  We can believe and stand in this truth, again because of God’s grace… Aaaahhh.  We can have Peace. Faith. Joy. Hope and say –  It is well with my soul.

Vs. 3 & 4 Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance

Perseverance, character; and character, hope.

  • Now for the difficult part.  I love how God’s Word always keeps it real with us.  God gives us all His promises.  His truth.  Then He tells us to apply His truth and promises to our difficult situations in life.
  • Sometimes life is very hard.  God is not comparing our difficulty to someone elses.  He says we can continue to have Peace. Faith. Joy. Hope… even in the midst of suffering.  Because WE KNOW.
  • We know what?  We know all the promises and truths He just shared with us in verses 1 and 2.  Suffering and trials are supposed to produce perseverance in our life.  However, that can only happen if we don’t quit.  Then perseverance will produce character… then we are back to Hope.
  • I thought about this pattern.  I wondered why character?  Why is it that character is what brings us back to hope.  I realized character building is maturing.  Growing up.  Gaining perspective and understanding.  All of those things help us to see that even when things are the most difficult for us,  nothing ever changes the truth and promises of God

Vs. 5 And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us.

  • Lastly, Hope from God and His promises never disappoint us.  We can count on Him.  They are all gifts that God gives to us with love through His Holy Spirit.  Every one of the promises we need to stand in – Peace. Faith. Joy. Perseverance. Character. Hope.  They are all found in the Holy Spirit of God.  Even when our faith is weak – we ask Him, “Help me in my unbelief.” and He is faithful to increase our faith and give us the ability to believe Him more.
