Back To School Inner City Backpack Giveaway

September 1, 2010

Last Saturday was the annual Dream Center

Back To School Bash and Backpack Giveaway for the inner city of Los Angeles.

  This is Faith.

She lives in one of the most challenging areas of Los Angeles –

the government projects in Watts, known for extreme gang violence and poverty.

Here she smiles for my phone camera just after she got her

Free backpack filled with school supplies.

We saw over 1,200 smiling faces of inner city kids receiving their new backpacks.

Here is a picture of my son, Nic.

He rode the Dream Center buses down to Watts to bring the children to the event.

Children came from all over the city of Los Angeles.

Some of them waiting in line for hours…

This is a picture of a group of kids hearing the gospel

many of them received Christ that day.

After the service and backpack distribution, it was time to play.

Free carnival games, water slides, jumpers, face painting…

 and even a petting zoo.

Local hair stylist worked all day giving Free hair cuts

and of course lots of Free food for everyone!

The Dream Center Back to School Bash

has become one of my most favorite Back to School traditions.

Awesome! Don’t you wish more could be done to help these kids get the great education they need to break the cycle of poverty? I’m sure they’re so appreciative of the backpacks, haircuts, and food, but most of all, for the idea that someone cares enough to do it for them, that someone wants them to have a positive school experience.

Thanks so much for taking the time to comment.
One of the most wonderful parts of what the Dream Center is doing is just what you were talking about.
They send buses out to these projects several times a week… to bring these children to church and also on Saturdays to visit with them and build relationships with them. Many are breaking the cycle. One life at a time. 🙂
