Discipline:  A Blessing from God

Job 5:17  Blessed is the man whom God corrects; so do not despise the discipline of the Almighty.

Proverbs 1:7  The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.

  • It is our natural tendency to despise discipline.  Self discipline is a fruit of God’s spirit and generally goes against our nature.   Although we might not like it, God tells us that His discipline and correction are a blessing in our life.  As I gave this concept some deeper thought… I began to think of what my life would be like if it were not for God leading me and straightening my crooked paths.  Where would I be?  What would I be doing?  Then it occurred to me that I am truly blessed to have the correction and discipline of God in my life.  That doesn’t mean that I shout for joy with each exhortation God gives me.   The truth be told, I rarely respond favorably to God’s correction initially –  but looking back over the last two decades of my life I can honestly say God’s discipline has blessed my life tremendously.

Proverbs 10:17  He who heeds discipline shows the way to life, but whoever ignores correction leads others astray

  • Another very good reason to listen to God’s correction in our life is the effect it will have on others in our life.  Discipline from God not only blesses our life but allows us the privilege of showing ‘the way of life’ to others as well.  On the other hand, ignoring discipline not only leads us astray but others as well.  We shouldn’t convince ourselves that when we choose to ignore God’s discipline no one else will be hurt.    Our choices always have an effect on the people around us… for the good and the bad.

2 Timothy 1:7  For God did not give us a spirit of timidity (fear), but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline (sound mind)

  •  No matter how difficult discipline seems to us, we have God’s promise that He gives us power and His love to help us walk in self-discipline.  I know that in my own life, lack of discipline in any area is usually a fleshly desire to fill a void I have with something other than God and His promises.  Mind, body and soul – God has equipped us with everything He is in order to enable us to walk with a sound mind.  We can (should we choose to) live our life with the mind of Christ.  Surrendering our fears, temptations and old mentalities in exchange for His power, His Love and a sound mind.

Discipline:  Not Always Fun but Fruitful

Hebrews 12:11 No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.

  • Discipline is not fun… it’s painful.  Discipline takes training.  Training requires practice. Because we are teaching ourselves to do something that doesn’t come natural to us.  Sometimes that is painful.  For this reason discipline is never fun or pleasant during the training but the fruit of discipline is the reason it is all worth it in the long run.  If we can rely on God and truly give Him a real chance to train us… it is life changing in the most positive and rewarding ways.

Discipline:  Protect Yourself with Self-Control

Proverbs 25:28  Like a city whose walls are broken down is a man who lacks self-control.

1 Peter 5:8  Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.

  • The Bible calls a person who lacks self-discipline like a city without walls.  In the Bible days, walls were built around cities to protect them from their enemy.  Back then, a city without walls was considered unprotected and vulnerable to the attacks of their enemy.  The Bible tells us that we have an enemy (the devil) who prowls around looking for someone to devour.  God’s advise to us for protection is to be self-disciplined and alert.

Yep… Discipline isn’t fun during the process, but the blessings it yields in our lives make it all well worth the temporary discomfort of training.

Enjoy a Disciplined Life!

Awesome! I love God’s Word. Thank you for taking us step by step on the subject of Discipline. Don’t we all need it? We don’t like to go through it, but we are blessed in the end, if we choose to follow God’s ways.

    Dios te Bendiga Danise! 🙂
