Integrity ~ Walk in the Light

January 20, 2010

1 John 1:6-8

If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth.

But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.

If we claim to be without sin,  we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.

Walking in the light doesn’t mean we are perfect or without any sin.  On the contrary, we are all sinners saved by the grace of God through Jesus Christ because we aren’t perfect and He is.  Walking in light does mean that God desires us to be the real deal.

Playing the “Christian game” isn’t integrity, it’s a lie.  Claiming to be something we are not makes us feel like a complete fake and it keeps us from enjoying close relationships with God and others.  When we aren’t being honest about who we really are, our guard is always up carefully protecting the façade so that no one will really know who we are.  How exhausting!  It’s so much more fulfilling and freeing to be the real deal.

This scripture encourages us to stop the lie and walk in the light.  Let the blood of Jesus purify us.   Then we can enjoy true fellowship with God and others.  Part of walking in integrity is being honest with God and others about who we are without hidden agendas and motives.  There is freedom in accepting the fact that we are not perfect and then recieving Grace from a perfect God.
