Where are your Kids Learning their Money Skills?

Last week I attended WE of SCV (Women Entrepreneurs of Santa Clarita) lunch and learn meeting.  I had the pleasure of meeting Patti Handy, the Teen Cash Coach.  Patti is a life coach, accountant and mom with a passion to teach kids and teens how to properly manage money.  This is a very important life skill that is grossly neglected in the classroom and possibly intimidating for parents.

A recent survey revealed that only 26% of teens between the ages of 13 -21 said they learned their money skills at home.  Patti is changing that by empowering parents and their children with great resources on money management.  She offers a complete home study course for teens – “Prosperous Teen” and her latest book entitled “How to Ditch your Allowance & be Richer than you Parents”.  Visit her website and blog at

Encourage kids to avoid spur-of-the-moment spending. While most kids have good intentions for their savings goals, their plans are often derailed by impulse purchases.

That’s so true… Often just taking the time to talk about the purchase before making it can help them make a better “long term” choice. Thanks so much for leaving a comment! 🙂
